Nasal polyps – Symptoms, causes, and management

Nasal polyps can be a symptom of an underlying condition or occur independently. The visible signs and symptoms of nasal polyps include congestion, runny nose, loss of smell, and pressure or pain around your eyes and cheeks. A deviated septum may contribute to nasal polyps. However, they can also occur in people who do not have this condition, such as athletes who blow their noses frequently during exercise routines. Read on to learn more about nasal polyps. What are nasal polyps? Nasal polyps are small, soft growths that develop in the lining of the nasal passages and sinuses. They are also sometimes called nasal tumors or nasal corking. They are not cancerous, contagious, or caused by allergies. Nasal polyps may also be associated with other conditions like chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), allergic rhinitis (AR), chronic sinusitis (CS), and asthma. Nasal polyps typically develop before the age of 40, and they do not usually cause symptoms until they grow larger or become inflamed or infected.  However, large nasal polyps can block airflow through your nose. If this happens, you may experience sinusitis, headaches, and a stuffy or runny nose. You may also experience difficulty breathing through one nostril at a time if large polyps block the other nostril completely. The result could be an imbalance in oxygen supply to both sides of the body and possible damage to blood vessels in the head (for example, inflammation). Symptoms of nasal polyps In most cases, nasal polyps are painless and cause no symptoms. However, some people with nasal polyps may experience the following symptoms: Congestion or stuffiness A runny nose Loss of smell Loss of taste Pressure or pain around your eyes, cheeks, and teeth Facial pain or headache Snoring Need to clear the throat frequently Frequent bleeding of the nose When to see a doctor? It is advisable to consult a healthcare expert if the symptoms persist for more than 10 days. Nasal polyps symptoms are primarily symptoms of other conditions like a common cold. One must seek immediate help if: One is having severe difficulty breathing The symptoms suddenly worsen Reduced ability to move eyes, or reduced vision There is severe swelling around the eyes Severe headache with high fever Causes of nasal polyps Scientists still don’t fully understand what causes nasal polyps, why some people have chronic inflammation, or why swelling and irritation (inflammation) in some people cause polyps to form but not in other people. Swelling occurs in the mucous membrane that lines the sinuses and nose, which produces fluid. Some research suggests that individuals who develop polyps have distinct immune system reactions and chemical markers in their mucous membranes than individuals who do not. Although nasal polyps can develop at any age, they most frequently occur in young and middle-aged adults. Nasal polyps can develop anywhere in the sinuses or nasal passages. However, they most frequently form in the region where the sinuses near the eyes, nose, and cheekbones drain into the nose through winding tubes. Who is at a higher risk? A person’s chance of having nasal polyps may be increased by any illness that causes chronic inflammation and swelling (inflammation) in the sinuses or nasal passages, such as infections or allergies. Nasal polyps are more common in people with CRS, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and specific allergies. Allergies and asthma are known to cause inflammation in the nose. This inflammation causes nasal polyps over time and infection with bacteria called Mycoplasma pneumoniae. M. pneumoniae can be passed from person to person through coughing or sneezing. However, it’s more likely that people will catch it from contaminated water or food than from others who carry the bacteria on their hands without knowing it. It’s common for people who have this condition—especially those who also have allergies or asthma—to experience frequent dryness in their noses as well as congestion during cold weather months (known as rhinitis). How are nasal polyps diagnosed? It is best to consult a healthcare expert if one shows symptoms of nasal polyps. To diagnose nasal polyps, a healthcare provider may: Specifically, inquire about a person’s allergies, infections, and asthma history. As a person describes their symptoms, be sure to include their duration. Use a nasal endoscope to view the interior of one’s nose (thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera and light). Order a CT scan to get a close-up look at a person’s sinuses. Treatment Nasal polyps are a challenging condition to clear up completely. A healthcare provider will develop a treatment plan to manage the symptoms and treat factors such as allergies that may lead to chronic swelling. The goal of nasal polyps treatment is to reduce their size or eliminate them. Sometimes, surgery may be required, but it is not a permanent solution as polyps may recur.  The treatment usually starts with a healthcare provider prescribing products that will make large polyps shrink or disappear. A doctor may prescribe corticosteroids to decrease the size of the polyps. However, if the prescription treatment doesn’t work for a patient, the doctor may suggest surgery to eliminate the nasal polyps completely.  Surgery is methodically done under general anesthesia and generally done by an ENT doctor (ear, nose, throat doctor). Surgery to remove nasal polyps usually requires anesthesia. Surgery can be performed under local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or sedation. Here, the doctor will cut into the wall of the patient’s nose and remove some of the tissue that contains the polyps. After surgery, one may need to take prescribed treatment for a few days to prevent infection. There are many different types of surgery, and it is essential to find a doctor experienced in removing nasal polyps. Prevention One must follow the following steps to manage nasal polyps or prevent them from recurring: Manage conditions like asthma and allergies as suggested by the doctor It is best to avoid nasal irritants Practice good hygiene by washing hands regularly to avoid any infection Use a humidifier to moisten the breathing passage Use salt water spray or nasal spray to rinse the nasal passage

The 6 most valuable stamps in the world

Collecting stamps is a great passion for many people. Such individuals can spend any amount of money to buy certain stamps and include them in their collections. In fact, there are a small group of stamps that are so rare that their value is in millions of dollars. These stamps contain special historical or geographical significance and are the ultimate collector’s items. In no particular order, here are some such rare, precious, and much-vaunted stamps: British Guiana 1 Cent Magenta ($11,628,700) Although the values keep fluctuating, the one-cent “Black on Magenta” of British Guiana from 1856 is widely considered to be the rarest and most valuable stamp out there. The history behind this stamp is fascinating. In 1856, British Guiana, a former colony of the British Empire, needed an extra supply of postage stamps from England. However, the stamps were not arriving immediately. In desperation, the postmaster of British Guiana requested the Official Gazette newspaper to print emergency issues for quick local use. In return, the postmaster received crude-looking stamp designs for one-cent and four-cent denominations; the former was meant for newspapers, while the latter was used for postal correspondence. This story and the locally-published stamps gained popularity, and their values skyrocketed in the later years, especially after the colony achieved independence from the United Kingdom in May 1966. The rectangular stamp’s design features an image of a sailing ship, the lettering “Black Guiana,” and a message in Latin, “Damus Petimus que Vicissim,” which roughly translates into “We Give and We Seek in Return.” Mauritius Post Office stamps ($12,790,600) The Mauritius Post Office stamps are among the most expensive ones in the world. While their resemblance to British stamps from the colonial era is uncanny, their value stems from the fact that they were British stamps created outside of Great Britain during the period. According to many records, there are about 27 examples of Two Penny blue and One Penny red 1847 Mauritius Post Office Stamps worldwide today. About three of the 27 are affixed to Lady Elizabeth Gomm’s “ball covers.” The distinguished woman was known for throwing lavish balls in Mauritius. The most valuable piece out of the rest is the Bordeaux Cover, which includes Two Penny blue and One Penny red examples affixed to an envelope but not used. In recent years, the stamps have been sold to wealthy buyers at eye-watering prices of €10,027,800 (about $12,790,600 when adjusted for inflation in 2023). Treskilling Yellow stamp ($4,248,000) This Swedish stamp from as early as 1855 is arguably the most renowned European-based stamp in the world. The value and sheer elusiveness of this stamp result from a printing error it contains. Because of the error, the stamp’s color is bright yellow instead of green, the usual color assigned to postage stamps in the zone in that period. Today, only one known example of the Treskilling Yellow stamp exists. Like the other stamps, this one also has an intriguing story. As the story goes, this stamp was first found by a schoolboy and philatelist, Georg Baeckman, when he was sifting through his grandmother’s rubbish bin in 1885. He went on to sell the stamp to a dealer for a lowly 7 Kroner the following year. Over the years, the stamp’s distinct color and alluring design have made it an auction favorite globally. In May 2013, Count Gustaf Douglas, one of the wealthiest people in the world, purchased the stamp for around $2.6 million and has preserved it in his personal collection. Benjamin Franklin Z Grill ($4,451,000) Priced at around $3 million, this stamp was “canceled” in the late 1860s by punching them with a steel grill. That created a unique pattern on these stamps and, over the years, has been one of the reasons for their ever-increasing popularity and monetary value. Its association with Benjamin Franklin is the other reason for its vaunted status. There are only two known copies of the one-cent Benjamin Franklin Z Grill in known existence. The first one is permanently locked in the New York Public Library’s Miller Collection, while the Mystic Stamp Company purchased the other for a ludicrous $935,000 way back in 1998. Sicilian Error of Color ($2,576,600) The 1859 Sicilian “Error of Color” stamp was originally intended to be orange but was mistakenly printed in blue. Today, there are only two known copies of this rare stamp in existence, making it highly sought-after by collectors due to its significant value. Both stamps were exhibited at the Manchester Philatelic Exposition in 1899. However, they were separated, and one was later sold as part of the Ferrari collection. In 2011, one of the stamps was sold for €1.8 million, equivalent to about $2,576,600 in inflation-adjusted 2023 dollars. The Whole Country is Red stamp ($2,307,700) This stamp is another example of a publishing mistake attaining immortality after decades. Originally, the stamp was made to commemorate the Chinese Cultural Revolution. However, the map in the stamp was deemed inaccurate, which is why the stamp was quickly pulled out from circulation when it was made. However, some copies remained, and they are available for purchase at more than $2 million in today’s day and age. Apart from these, some other precious stamps are Two Penny Blue ($2,327,400), Alexandria Blue Boy ($2,040,500), Inverted Jenny ($1,631,700), and the Inverted Declaration of Independence ($1,615,400). A similar type of stamp collection is the Forever Stamps, created by the United States Postal Service (USPS) in 2007. They are non-denominational First Class® postage, meaning that they can be used to mail First Class letters at any postal rate. 100 Forever Stamps for sale are available at many e-stores. Also, one can purchase cheap stamps from Stamps.com if they are looking for reasonably-priced options. Also, the values listed here are highly dynamic in nature, making these stamps even more lucrative and precious collector’s items.

5 Early Signs of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, neurological condition. Doctors have yet to identify the cause of inflammation but attribute it to a complex link between genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. About 2.8 million people in the world were affected by MS in 2020, the number continues to increase worldwide. The condition can lead to loss of vision, immobility, chronic pain, muscle weakness, and other complications. How does MS develop? The function of the nerve cells in the body is to send and receive signals from the brain. Each nerve cell has three parts: the soma or cell body, the axon or the cell trunk, and the dendrites. Together they transport the nutrients necessary for the nerve cells, convert signals into electric impulses, and send them throughout the body. The organs and limbs receive these signals, make changes, and respond accordingly. A myelin sheath is a sleeve or a protective covering around nerve cells made of lipids, proteins, and fats. Multiple sclerosis occurs when our immune system becomes faulty and mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath in the brain and spinal cord. This damages the myelin or causes lesions, plaque, or sclerosis, disrupting the process of transferring a message from the nervous system. So, the communication from and to the nervous system breaks down. The messages from the cells now may be slow or inaccurate, or the recipient’s body parts may ignore them completely. Warning signs MS is a progressive condition more likely to affect women than men. Here, the damage to the nervous system gradually worsens. While some may experience one or two major symptoms, others may experience more. The severity of the symptoms also fluctuates from mild to severe, with periods of remission in between. Though there is no cure yet, with proper treatment, rehabilitation therapies, and lifestyle changes, one can manage the symptoms and live an active life. Recognizing the sudden and abnormal changes can help in the early identification of MS. Early treatment can prevent serious health complications like high blood sugar, bone loss, fractures, kidney problems, frequent bruising, and reduced adrenal gland function. A few early signs are: Muscles stiffness and spasticity Spasticity is when the muscle tone increases abnormally. It causes stiffness and pain and makes movement difficult. It can also lead to sudden spasms and jerks in the arms and legs. Other symptoms include the involuntary crossing of legs, muscle fatigue, and sudden development of deformities. Problems with vision MS is an inflammatory condition that can affect any nerve cell. If it affects the eye’s optic nerve, the inflammation may cause pain and redness. It typically affects only one eye; one can experience blurred or cloudy vision, double or poor vision, or an inability to see color. If untreated, the eyesight can deteriorate, leading to early cataracts or vision loss. Pain People with MS may feel aches associated with muscle stiffness and spasms and experience pain while moving an eye. Each person may experience different forms of mild or severe pain, interfering with their ability to carry out daily activities. The pain may be dull for some, while others may feel a squeezing, crushing, stabbing, or shocking sensation. Pins and needles or a tingling sensation are also common signs. Some may feel pain in their muscles and joints caused by muscle stiffness. Lack of balance The disruption in the communication process may cause a delay in the way messages are sent, processed, and received. Some messages may be incomplete or inaccurate. Consequently, different body parts may not be able to work together in sync. This causes a loss of balance, swaying gait, and inability to maintain posture. Some may not be able to feel the floor and misjudge their steps. Lack of balance can lead to frequent trips and falls, even while walking on even grounds. Fatigue Mild or severe fatigue without an apparent cause can be an early sign of MS. Fatigue may worsen through the day and affect the ability to carry out daily activities. Lack of bladder control is another symptom of MS, which may keep one from having a good night’s sleep. Symptoms like pain, confusion, and mood changes may also lead to depression, preventing them from sleeping and adding to fatigue. Relapsing multiple sclerosis New treatments have improved the prognosis for people with MS, improving their quality of life and helping them manage the symptoms. For some patients, the symptoms may flare up or recur after treatment. Between the episodes of flare-ups, one can go through periods of remission without experiencing any of the typical MS symptoms. This type of MS is called relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Most people initially experience relapsing multiple sclerosis, and it may take quite some time, a decade or more, for the pattern of symptoms to change. Doctors diagnose the condition as RRMS if the symptoms last for at least 24 hours, during which they also worsen. The relapses are followed by a period of remission where some or most symptoms completely disappear. The symptoms of RRMS include sensitivity to heat and humidity, vision problems, numbness and tingling in the feet, weakness, fatigue, confusion, frequent urination, incontinence, and balance issues leading to falls. Diagnosis and management A neurologist will recommend multiple tests to rule out other diseases before confirming MS. They will conduct a detailed physical examination to check for vision and balance problems. They may also ask for brain and spine MRIs to locate the damage and functions affected. In a technique called “visual evoked potentials”, painless electrodes are attached to the scalp to measure the brain’s response to the objects one sees. Doctors may also do a spinal tap to check for abnormalities in the spinal fluid. The goal of treatment for regular or relapsing multiple sclerosis is to reduce inflammation and the severity of symptoms and slow the disease progression, for which doctors may recommend prescription options. They may also recommend plasmapheresis—a procedure to cleanse the blood. Mobility devices like canes or walkers to maintain balance can also help.

9 Foods to Eat to Manage Depression

With depression affecting millions worldwide, understanding the potential of food as a complementary approach to managing the condition has become increasingly important. While no magic food can instantly cure the condition, scientific studies suggest that including specific nutrients and certain foods in one’s daily intake can help manage and alleviate its symptoms. One should remember that these are merely complementary and must not replace treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Foods that help manage depression Here are some foods identified by various studies as natural allies to manage depression: Dark leafy greens Dark leafy greens prevent inflammation, which has been linked to severe depression and brain inflammation. Due to their abundance of minerals, phytochemicals, and vitamins A, C, E, and K, leafy greens are particularly crucial. This nutrient-dense food group, which includes spinach, kale, Swiss chard, and broccoli, helps strengthen the immune system and stop the growth of malignant cells in the body. Because they are so versatile, dark leafy greens can be included in all sorts of meals, such as salads, smoothies, soups, or doughs. One can eat them raw in salads, sauté them in olive oil and garlic, mix them with other veggies like corn and bell peppers, or even add them to smoothies with bananas or other fruits for a drink filled with nutrients. Walnuts Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids support brain function and lower the risk of depression symptoms. Most nuts, particularly walnuts, are rich in polyunsaturated fats, including the crucial omega-3 fatty acids. The presence of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and other nutrients in walnuts is believed to boost energy levels and concentration, fight oxidative stress in the body, and contribute positively to one’s mental health. One can eat a handful of walnuts in a day as a snack. While nuts are generally considered a healthy addition to most diets, there are a few groups of people who should exercise moderation in their nut consumption. Those allergic to them, older people, or young children with weaker digestive systems can exercise caution since nuts are more difficult to digest than fruits and vegetables. One can consult a doctor on the ideal quantity for one’s health needs. Avocados Avocados are a superfood for the brain. This versatile food contains healthy fats, especially oleic acid. Protein, vitamin K, vitamin B9, vitamin B6, vitamin B5, vitamin C, and vitamin E12 are all present in avocados, which should be had daily. Due to their high fiber and low sugar content, avocados can support healthy brain function. They are a delicious and nutritious addition to salads. Berries Berries are one of the richest sources of antioxidants and vitamin C, which is associated with a reduced risk of depression. Apart from helping to fight depression, these nutrient-dense foods can also significantly help improve cell health, protect against age-related cognitive decline, and contribute positively to one’s skin health. Common berries include blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Mushrooms Studies have also shown that intestinal health can affect mood since the nerve cells in the gut are responsible for producing the crucial neurotransmitter serotonin. Mushrooms are superfoods that maintain the balance of one’s gut bacteria by acting like probiotics. Alternatively, these superfoods have chemical components that balance mood and work to control blood sugar levels, which can be beneficial for individuals with diabetes. Mushrooms are easy to cook and can be eaten in salads, omelets, or a number of other home-cooked meals. Yogurt Besides mushrooms, one can also go for kefir or yogurt as rich probiotic alternatives that promote gut health. One should eat unsweetened natural yogurt to get maximum benefits and avoid unnecessary sugar intake that may further complicate one’s condition. Beans Beans provide a number of advantages, including a high fiber content that helps maintain mood. Beans are a good option for people looking to stabilize their mood since they are digested slowly, reduce cravings for processed grains like bread and help to control blood sugar levels. Beans may be included in meals as a delicious carbohydrate alternative. Fish, tofu, and milk Vitamin D is an extremely important nutrient that fulfills and supports various body functions, including bone health, immune function, and mental well-being. While sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, foods like tofu, fish, and milk can also provide this essential vitamin. Tofu, a soy-based product, is suitable for vegan eaters, while milk should only be consumed by those who are not lactose intolerant. Sometimes, vitamin D from food alone may not meet one’s body’s demands. In this case, one should consult a healthcare professional to determine specific requirements and oral treatments to boost one’s vitamin D levels. Cacao A minimum of 85% cacao in dark chocolate offers multiple health benefits to individuals, especially women battling depression. It contains flavanols that naturally stabilize one’s mood and boost memory and immunity. Apart from being a delicious snack, it is also anti-inflammatory and has been shown to reduce depression symptoms. One should avoid store-bought chocolates since they mainly contain sugar and little cacao. To ensure one eats the right chocolate, one can check a product’s labels and do research before buying the best dark chocolate. Diagnosis of depression Testing to determine whether or not one is exhibiting depressive symptoms is the first stage in diagnosing depression. One can find numerous science-backed and healthcare professional-recommended self-assessment tests online, with questionnaires that try to understand an individual’s body and mind. If one shows signs of depression, one can also visit a doctor directly, who will take a series of tests, from questionnaires and conversational sessions to blood tests that may detect any existing deficiencies. Often, depression is a side effect of certain nutrient deficiencies or underlying health conditions. Hence, these tests also help a professional rule out other illnesses and begin therapies to treat chronic depression if it is diagnosed. Treatment options Vraylar is an effective treatment option for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and other mental conditions, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The cost of the treatment may vary depending on an individual’s needs and the doctor’s recommendations. Apart from that, it may also be recommended to take other oral treatments, physical exercises, and complementary therapies, including acupuncture, yoga, and meditation. One is advised to detail one’s symptoms honestly to one’s healthcare professional to ensure that the treatment received is accurate and effective.

5 bad habits that can trigger heartburn

Heartburn or acid reflux is a condition in which stomach acid flows back to the esophagus, leading to a burning sensation in the chest and throat. Certain foods, especially those that are spicy, processed, or fried, and several ongoing treatment options may contribute to heartburn or worsen it. Additionally, a few seemingly harmless daily habits can increase the risk of acid reflux. So, here are unhealthy habits that may trigger heartburn: Overeating Eating large meals or more than one requires is one of the biggest reasons for heartburn. When one eats, the food travels through the esophagus to the stomach. Between the mouth and the stomach, there is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, which closes up when the food reaches the stomach. However, when one eats too much, the stomach stays distended, meaning it is unable to close due to the pressure of food inside of it. When the LES does not close, the extra food and stomach juices can easily travel back up through the esophagus, causing acid reflux or heartburn. Eating too quickly Being impatient with meals is another trigger for heartburn. Further, eating while lying down, eating too close to bedtime, having large meals frequently, and not maintaining enough gap between two meals to allow digestion are some other unhealthy habits that may trigger heartburn. Not engaging in physical activities According to height and other individual characteristics, there is an ideal body mass for each everyone. When the body mass exceeds the normal range, one may be at a higher risk of heartburn. In fact, certain studies suggested that those who experienced heartburn issues typically had higher body mass than those who did not. However, exercise too can trigger heartburn at times. This may happen due to increased pressure in the abdominal region while working out, especially those who lift heavy loads while exercising. Cyclists are also known to experience heartburn the least, and runners usually notice mild symptoms of heartburn. Ignoring treatment side effects When dealing with health conditions, the treatment could have side effects like heartburn. Such health issues include high blood pressure, heart issues, asthma, osteoporosis, anxiety, insomnia, arthritis or other similar diseases, depression, Parkinson’s, cancer, muscle spasms, or pain. Certain treatments recommended for hormone therapy may also cause heartburn. So, it is important to understand the risks of treatment options and consult a doctor to help minimize such side effects. Overlooking other underlying issues Hiatal hernia is a condition in which the lower esophagus sphincter and the upper part of the stomach move above the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a muscular wall that separates the stomach from the chest and also helps in keeping the LES closed so that the stomach acid and food do not back up into the esophagus. However, when the stomach bulges through the diaphragm, it develops into a hiatal hernia. This is not brought on by unhealthy habits but due to injury in the region or any persistent and intense pressure around the muscles. So, vomiting, coughing, exerting too much pressure during bowel movement, or exercising with heavy weights with no proper posture can increase the risk of hiatal hernia, which further leads to acid reflux. It is usually difficult to diagnose a hiatal hernia as heartburn is the only symptom here, which can be confused with many other complications. Tips for managing heartburn Upon observing persistent heartburn, one should speak to a doctor first to eliminate the possibility of other health conditions contributing to the problem. In addition to treatment, the following tips can help one manage the condition: Maintain a food journal: This can be especially helpful when one has not yet identified the foods that cause or trigger heartburn. Maintaining a food journal will help one keep track of foods and drinks that do not cause uneasiness and those that do. Doctors usually suggest limiting the intake of spicy food, as it seems to be a trigger for most people. Further, overly processed foods or fried foods can trigger acid reflux. Eat alkaline foods: To lower the risk of heartburn, one can choose alkaline food like a ripe banana, which is known for its high potassium content and can help one manage acid reflux. One can also opt for melons, cauliflower, fennel, and nuts. However, unripe bananas are not as alkaline, so they may, in fact, trigger heartburn instead of helping relieve it.  Wear loose clothing: This may seem to be unrelated, but wearing tight clothes contracts the muscles in the body and restricts proper movement. This can squeeze the stomach muscles, which may trigger acid reflux by sending stomach juices back up through the esophagus. So wearing loose clothes is usually encouraged to lower the risk of heartburn. Wearing comfortable clothes is usually better than tight outfits to also allow the skin to breathe properly. Fix sleeping position: One should keep their head and chest elevated than the lower body so as to not allow the stomach fluid to flow back up through the food pipe. One can adjust their mattress in such a way that they stay in the same position while sleeping. Adding a foam wedge under the mattress near the headboard can help ensure the chest stays slightly elevated. One should, however, avoid opting for uncomfortable sleeping positions or making drastic changes if they are likely to develop neck or back pain due to such changes.  Manage stress: Those experiencing chronic stress are also prone to physical changes in their body. The stress can slow digestion, letting food stay in the stomach for a longer period and allowing the stomach acid to back up into the esophagus. Also, stress can contribute to an increased sensitivity to pain, which can make heartburn seem even more painful.

Easy Ways to Prevent Cyber Attacks

Today, we use the internet for almost everything: shopping, paying bills, communicating with friends, watching movies, gaming, and work. It would not be an overstatement to say that we use the internet just as much as we use oxygen. But while technology has made our lives easier, it has also increased the risk of cyber threats. Therefore, you must use the internet responsibly and take the steps necessary to prevent untoward incidents. Ways to prevent cyber attacks The following are a few tips to prevent cyber attacks and stay safe in the digital world: Do not fall for phishing scams Have you ever received an email or message saying you won a reward and asking for personal information to claim it? Such messages could contain dangerous viruses, and clicking on them could steal your data. A quick fix to such phishing scams is to avoid opening emails you are unsure about. If you do not recognize the email ID, delete the mail straight away. Also, remember to clean your trash folder periodically. If you own a small business, you could sign up for cyber security services like CrowdStrike’s endpoint software. The platform can protect every computer on your network from scams and malware in real time. Set strong passwords Setting passwords can be tricky. Most people set short passwords that are easy to remember and reuse them for multiple accounts. This makes it effortless for hackers to guess the password and simultaneously break into all your accounts. So, create a unique password for every profile, preferably using a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. If you think you will forget them, maintain an offline record. Do not write them online or store them on your computer. Enable 2FA As mentioned, you are making things easy for a seasoned hacker by using the same passwords everywhere. Accessing one account will allow them to “daisy chain” into another. If you still want to use the same password, enable 2FA (two-factor authentication). After doing so, you will have to enter one more form of identification besides a password to access your account, such as a PIN sent to your cell phone. Though it adds a few extra steps and takes more effort, it can prevent a hacker from accessing your profiles. Be prompt with updates If you are someone who always clicks “remind me later” on update notifications, it is time to break this habit. Browser updates typically fix flaws of their previous versions, patch security vulnerabilities, and improve existing features or add new ones. The latest version is usually safer and easier to use. So, do not delay updating your software when you have the opportunity. Use social media cautiously Many people are guilty of using social media the way they behave in the real world. Some are naturally chatty and love talking about themselves. But when this habit translates online, it invites many dangers. When you talk about yourself a lot and find someone who does the same online, you tend to trust them. Unfortunately, this is how many fall for scams, lose money, buy damaged products, or get preyed on in other ways. So, deal with people online a little skeptically. Shop safely As more and more businesses go online, the number of unreliable websites appears to be increasing. So, check the URL of web pages thoroughly. If discounts and offers seem too good to be true, they probably are not. Also, never save your bank details on any website. If your internet account is hacked, the hacker gets access not just to your account but also to your money. Use safe websites from brands you know or ask others for recommendations. Online reviews can also be fake, so ask reliable sources for advice. Do not use unsafe flash drives Backing up your files is essential, but where you back them up also matters. An external flash drive can be filled with malware that can affect your entire network of devices and steal almost all their data. Always use your own flash drive or one that belongs to someone you trust. If it is not your device, it is best not to use it. If you have no choice, install antivirus software before using risky drives to prevent a cyber attack. Browsing mistakes to avoid The following are a few mistakes to avoid when using the web browser to prevent a cyber attack: Browsing with free Wi-Fi Your local library or cafe’s free Wi-Fi is just as tempting to a hacker as it is to you. Public Wi-Fi networks can be an attractive hotspot for hackers to upload malware, and as you join it, their software can gain access to your passwords and other data on your device. So, avoid the mistake of joining public Wi-Fi. Even if you do, do not pay bills or check your tax returns while connected. The home is where the internet is safe and where you can access any account or website. Opening multiple tabs If you usually multi-task to complete work projects, you probably open several browser tabs. Sometimes, a site may catch your eye, so you may leave it open for later and create a new tab as you do not have time for it. Browser performance suffers when you open multiple tabs, increasing the risk of vulnerabilities. It is best to bookmark pages and open them later or spend a few minutes to finish the job instantly. You can send the link to a friend and talk about it instead of suffering from low browser performance. Enabling all cookies Cookies are tiny files stored on your browser. These files are usually harmless and are meant to improve the browsing experience. However, some websites can use them to track your web behavior. So, allow cookies only from the websites you trust. While almost everyone knows the dangers of the internet and the mistakes one could make, they adopt a complacent approach to browsing and believe that none of the catastrophes could affect them. One should avoid this attitude and take the necessary steps to stay safe online. Remember, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Types and costs of dental implants

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots composed of titanium alloy. These versatile prosthetics provide functional benefits such as chewing, fluent speech, and an improved natural-looking smile. Effective and long-lasting implant surgery requires professional guidance. A single-tooth implant costs range from $1,000 to $4,000 and may vary based on one’s location and implant type. Read on to learn more about the types of implants and the associated treatment costs. Need for dental implants As discussed above, dental implants help restore oral health without damaging healthy teeth. Furthermore, they help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration in the absence of teeth. One may need a tooth replacement if one: Has a missing tooth or multiple teeth due to injury, disease, or genetics Has lost a significant amount of jawbone due to a gum disease Has ill-fitting dentures Dental implants may also provide psychological benefits: A full smile with well-aligned teeth can boost confidence while interacting with others. It boosts overall well-being and emotional health as one can enjoy a healthy meal plan and lifestyle. Steps of a dental implant procedure Extraction of the damaged tooth Bone grafting (a surgical procedure to repair damaged bone using transplanted bone, usually taking a few months to heal) Cutting the gums (to expose the bone) and drilling into it Placing an implant Osseointegration (a process where the transplanted bone bonds with the implant, which may take several months to ensure a sturdy base for the dental crown) Abutment placement (fixing a metal base on the implant to keep it in place) Crown fixing (placing a dental crown on the abutment when the implants become strong enough to chew food) The root structure of implants is titanium, which is biocompatible with human tissue. The titanium oxide layer helps to protect the implants from bacteria, reducing the risk of implant failure or infection. Every implant is structure-specific, implying that the placement and architecture of the implant are unique and specific for each patient. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, about 500,000 implants are placed annually in the country. Types of dental implants Endosteal implants Endosteal implants have become a go-to option as an effective means of replacing missing teeth. This innovative approach offers stability and durability by affixing titanium posts inside the jawbone beneath the gums. Once merged, a custom-made abutment and crown are placed on the implant, allowing one to return to normal activities with a natural-looking appearance and improved function. A single endosteal implant can range from $3,000 to $5,000. Benefits of endosteal implants They are less likely to cause irritation or inflammation. They don’t slip or move around like dentures, as they become a part of the jawbone. Unlike dentures, they can reduce the jawbone’s resorption or shrinking. Subperiosteal implants Subperiosteal implants imply a metal frame secured directly above your jawbone. The metal frame anchors the replacement teeth, which look and function like natural teeth. The implant supports a prosthesis, such as a bridge, which fills the jawline area. Individuals suffering from significant bone loss due to periodontal disease or advanced age choose subperiosteal implants. Unlike regular implants, subperiosteal implants are less invasive as they don’t require much jawbone material to be removed surgically. The cost of an implant can be approximately $20,000. Benefits of subperiosteal implants It offers a more secure, long-term solution than dentures or other implant surgery because the frame sits above the jawbone, right beneath the gum tissue. Subperiosteal implants are an innovative solution for tooth loss restoration using modern technology. Subperiosteal implants can replace complete teeth arches, as this surgery uses fewer implants than traditional implant surgery. Zygomatic implants The implant is placed in the zygomatic bone, positioned at the cheekbone, and is thicker and denser than the jawbone, providing greater stability. Once the implant is secure, the dentist places a crown or bridge to replace the missing tooth or teeth. Unlike regular implants, zygomatic implants can also replace multiple missing teeth or multi-root restorations. Generally, one implant can cost anywhere from $3000 to $5000, depending on the case specifics. Benefits of zygomatic implants These implants heal quicker than traditional implants. They do not necessitate bone grafting or sinus augmentation procedures, which can significantly reduce the cost of the implant process. Due to their placement in the cheekbone, zygomatic implants provide increased support and leverage for larger prostheses than regular implants. All-on-4 implants The all-on-4 implant treatment is ideal for replacing all teeth on either jaw. It securely anchors the bridge or denture to four implants without grinding the natural teeth. The dentist will place the four implants at a specific angle, depending on the size and shape of one’s jawbone. The bridge or denture then uses the four implants to support the new set of teeth. The procedure’s average cost can range between $15,000 and $20,000 per arch. Benefits of all-on-4 implants This treatment is faster and more convenient than traditional dentures or bridges, with fewer visits to the dentist. All-on-4 implants can last for years and require low maintenance, keeping a person’s mouth healthy even as one ages. The all-on-4 implant system minimizes the risk of gum diseases. The associated costs of dental implants The cost of dental implants can vary from patient to patient, depending on several factors like the type of implant, the difficulty of the implant procedure, and whether or not patients will require any adjunctive treatments like crowns. A single implant may cost between $1,500 and $3,000, depending on the number of implants needed. If one requires more than one implant, the price will be higher. A complete set of implants is about $34,000. The materials used for the implant may also impact the overall cost. Titanium is the most commonly used material for dental implants and is typically more expensive than its alternatives, ceramics or zirconium. Before undergoing dental implants treatment, always discuss the best way forward with the dentist. It would be a good idea to get an estimate of the treatment right at the beginning.
